Shaimen Island

Today we went to Shaimen Island first thing in the morning to have Kievah's TB test read. It was NEGATIVE!! Yay! The other family that is with us were not so fortunate, their daughter's test was positive, so she had to have a chest X-ray, but thankfully it showed clear lungs and no TB so most likely it was a false positive from the live TB vaccinations that are given here in China. We have the same live vaccinations in Ireland so I always come back positive when tested for TB.

After the TB tests we got to roam around Shaimen Island for a few hours. It was incredibly hot so our first stop was to Starbucks where the air conditioning was cranked up high and the iced mochas were delicious. Then to the stores which especially cater to adoptive families. There is a hotel on Shaimen Island called the White Swan and this is where many adoptive families stay, as a result a small industry of souvenir shops has sprung up all around it. They have Chinese baby and children's clothes and everything that a visitor to China could possibly want to buy. On the Island there is even a diner named "Lucy's" with a very American decor and menu. We ate lunch there, and it almost felt like being in the Trivet Restaurant at home. The island has some beautiful bronze statues scattered around it, mostly of young children.

When we were ready to leave, the other mother asked me if I would like to stay with her to do a little more shopping, and then catch a taxi back to the hotel. I agreed since I still had a few presents to buy. This turned out not to have been such a smart idea. When I returned to the hotel an hour and a half later I found a rather worn out Chris, and a sobbing little girl. She had been crying for her Mama for nearly an hour. While this was rotten for Chris, it did my heart good to know she missed me, and is a good sign that some bonding has already started. She fell asleep for an afternoon nap almost immediately with my arms wrapped around her and is still sleeping soundly.
